- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup dark cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup freshly brewed espresso or 2 teaspoons instant espresso powder dissolved in ½ cup hot water
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons espresso (cooled)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream
- Dark chocolate shavings
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, granulated sugar, and brown sugar.
- In another bowl, combine eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla, and espresso. Mix well.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until smooth, being careful not to overmix.
- Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Add espresso and vanilla. Gradually add powdered sugar. Mix in heavy cream until light and fluffy.
- Assemble the cake: Place one layer on a cake stand, frost the top, add the second layer, and frost the top and sides.
- Garnish with chocolate shavings if desired. Serve at room temperature.
